    Summary

Panic disorder patients with chronic pain showed higher depression and somatization. Neurophysiological changes and pain saturation indicate maladaptive disorders in this group.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry
    • Pain Medicine

    Background:

    • Panic disorder (PD) is often comorbid with chronic pain conditions.
    • The psychophysiological underpinnings of this comorbidity are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate psychophysiological factors associated with chronic pain in patients with panic disorder.
    • To differentiate between PD patients with and without co-occurring algesic syndromes.

    Main Methods:

    • Examined 35 PD patients, divided into groups with (n=17) and without (n=18) algesic syndromes.
    • Assessed pain "saturation," depression (Beck's scale), psychopathology (SCL scale), contingent negative deviation (CND), and nociceptive flexor reflex.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with algesic syndromes reported higher pain "saturation," atypical pain attacks, and a stronger link between PD onset and biological factors.
    • Significantly higher depression and somatization scores were observed in the group with algesic syndromes.
    • Abnormal CND parameters and increased subjective pain perception indicated maladaptive disorders in patients with chronic pain.

    Conclusions:

    • Specific psychophysiological factors contribute to the development of chronic pain syndromes in PD patients.
    • Abnormal neurophysiological responses and heightened psychological distress are characteristic of PD patients with comorbid chronic pain.
