Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Immunology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is implicated in autoimmune disorders.
  • Elevated IL-6 serum levels are observed in schizophrenia patients.
  • Central nervous system involvement in schizophrenia warrants investigation of IL-6 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate concomitant levels of CSF and serum IL-6 in schizophrenia patients compared to controls.
  • To assess the influence of antipsychotic medication and disease exacerbation on IL-6 levels.
  • To determine if IL-6 levels differ significantly from control values in schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure IL-6 levels.
  • CSF and serum IL-6 were measured in 61 male schizophrenic patients and 25 male healthy controls.
  • Patients were assessed both on and off antipsychotic medication.

Main Results:

  • Serum IL-6 levels were significantly higher in schizophrenic patients than in controls.
  • CSF IL-6 levels were higher in patients but did not reach statistical significance.
  • Plasma IL-6 decreased significantly in patients experiencing exacerbation after medication withdrawal, suggesting a compensatory response.

Conclusions:

  • IL-6 levels may be altered in schizophrenia.
  • The findings suggest a potential role for IL-6 in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
  • Plasma IL-6 response to exacerbation may indicate a compensatory mechanism.
