Summary

Interleukin-10 (IL10) gene polymorphisms do not appear to be linked to multiple sclerosis (MS) risk or disease severity in Caucasian populations. This study found no association between IL10 promoter variations and MS development or progression.

Background:

  • Interleukin-10 (IL10) is a key anti-inflammatory cytokine with a potential role in modulating immune responses in neurological diseases.
  • Genetic variations in the IL10 promoter region, specifically at positions -1082, -819, and -519, have been linked to differential IL10 production levels.
  • The -1082*G allele is associated with higher in vitro IL10 production, while the -1082*A allele is linked to lower production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between common IL10 promoter polymorphisms and the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To determine if these IL10 polymorphisms influence disease severity and progression in Caucasian MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping of three IL10 promoter dimorphisms (-1082, -819, -519) was performed in 185 Caucasian MS patients and 211 ethnically matched controls.

    • Further research may be needed to explore other genetic or environmental factors contributing to MS pathogenesis.
