Summary

This study reviews 34 chromoblastomycosis cases, noting a high prevalence of Fonsecaea compacta and unusual infection sites. Combination azole therapy showed some success for clinical cure in these challenging fungal infections.

Background:

  • Presents four new cases of chromoblastomycosis and reviews 30 additional Indian patients.
  • Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic fungal infection affecting the skin and subcutaneous tissues.

Observation:

  • The study included 34 patients aged 12-80 years, with a 5.8:1 male to female ratio.
  • Early onset (before 20 years) occurred in 24% of cases.
  • Sclerotic bodies were observed in 84% of cases, and cultures were positive in 72%.

Findings:

  • Fonsecaea compacta showed a relatively higher prevalence (15%).
  • Unusual cutaneous sites included the penile shaft, vulva, and nose ala.
  • Extracutaneous involvement (24%) was observed in the pleural cavity, ileocecal region, and laryngotracheal area.
