Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Papuloerythroderma is a rare, poorly understood skin disorder.
  • Limited treatment options exist due to the scarcity of reported cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of etretinate in treating papuloerythroderma.
  • To report the first successful treatment of papuloerythroderma using etretinate.

Main Methods:

  • Seven male patients diagnosed with papuloerythroderma were treated with etretinate at moderate doses (0.2-0.6 mg/kg/day).
  • Treatment response, remission duration, and side effects were monitored.
  • Dosage adjustments and maintenance therapy were implemented post-remission.

Main Results:

  • Six out of seven patients achieved complete remission within 2-5 weeks.
  • One patient maintained remission for 16 months after drug cessation.
  • Maintenance therapy with etretinate or topical steroids managed recurrences effectively.
  • No severe adverse effects were reported during the study.

Conclusions:

  • Etretinate demonstrates significant efficacy in treating papuloerythroderma.
  • Etretinate is a safe and effective therapeutic option for this rare dermatosis.
  • Further research into etretinate's role in managing papuloerythroderma is warranted.
