Summary

Shorter rest intervals (20s) during circuit weight training (CWT) significantly increase excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) and net calorie expenditure during recovery. However, longer rest intervals (60s) result in slightly greater total caloric expenditure when exercise and recovery are combined.

Background:

  • Limited research exists on energy expenditure during and after circuit weight training (CWT).
  • Rest interval duration between sets influences metabolic responses to resistive exercise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of rest-interval duration on the magnitude of 1-hour excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) following CWT.

Main Methods:

  • Seven healthy men participated in randomized CWT sessions with either 20-second (20 RI) or 60-second (60 RI) rest intervals.
  • Each session involved two circuits of eight upper and lower body exercises, with 20 repetitions performed at 75% of the 20-repetition maximum.

Main Results:

  • The 1-hour EPOC was significantly higher following the 20 RI session (10.3 L) compared to the 60 RI session (7.40 L).
