Common breast problems: detection and management

Current guidelines and techniques for cancer screening are presented. Assessment of risk factors and significant physical and historical findings are discussed. Management of the more common breast problems is outlined. The primary care provider is left with the following thoughts (suggestions): 1. If a patient's worries or concerns are not relieved by a negative work-up, a second opinion should be sought. 2. 80 percent of the women with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors! 3. High-risk patients should have increased surveillance or referral to a cancer specialist. 4. Any palpable solid or suspicious mass should be evaluated, even with a normal mammogram.
