Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare patient and nursing staff beliefs regarding the advantages and disadvantages of condom catheters versus indwelling urinary catheters.

  • A survey was conducted with male patients using condom or indwelling catheters and nursing staff at a Veterans Affairs medical center.
  • Convenience sampling yielded high response rates: 90% from 116 eligible patients and 92% from 107 eligible nursing staff.

Main Results:

  • Patients with condom catheters reported greater comfort and less pain and activity restriction compared to those with indwelling catheters.
  • Nursing staff perceived condom catheters as less painful, less restrictive, and easier to apply, but also noted higher rates of dislodgement and leakage.

  • Both patients and nursing staff favor condom catheters for comfort, despite acknowledging dislodgement and leakage issues.
  • Development of a more secure condom catheter could significantly enhance the management of male urinary incontinence.
