Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Diabetic fibrous mastopathy (DFM) is a rare, benign breast condition.
  • DFM is frequently associated with autoimmune disorders and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).
  • The clinical and radiological presentation of DFM can mimic breast malignancy.

Observation:

  • Two cases of DFM are presented.
  • DFM typically occurs in patients with underlying autoimmune conditions or diabetes.
  • The benign nature of DFM can be obscured by its malignant-like presentation.

Findings:

  • DFM is a challenging diagnosis due to its potential to simulate malignancy.
  • The presence of diabetes or autoimmune disorders can be a key diagnostic clue.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Core biopsy is proposed as a potential replacement for surgical biopsy in diagnosing DFM.
  • Implications:

    • Accurate diagnosis of DFM is crucial to avoid unnecessary surgical interventions.
    • Recognizing the association with diabetes and autoimmune disorders aids in diagnosis.
    • Core biopsy may offer a less invasive diagnostic approach for DFM.
