Area of Science:

  • Hepatobiliary Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Ascariasis affects approximately 1.5 billion individuals globally.
  • Gallbladder ascariasis is a less frequent but observed complication in endemic regions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical features and outcomes of gallbladder ascariasis.
  • To evaluate the management and treatment efficacy for this condition.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective analysis of 1300 patients with hepatobiliary ascariasis.
  • Detailed presentation of 56 cases specifically involving gallbladder ascariasis.

Main Results:

  • Ultrasonography diagnosed 47 cases; laparotomy diagnosed 9 cases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Only 10 ultrasonography-diagnosed cases resolved spontaneously.
  • 37 patients required cholecystectomy for treatment.
  • Conclusions:

    • Gallbladder ascariasis is a significant clinical issue in endemic areas.
    • Cholecystectomy is the usual and necessary treatment for gallbladder ascariasis.
