Area of Science:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Adrenal gland pathologies require surgical intervention.
  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy has emerged as a viable alternative to open surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of this minimally invasive approach for various adrenal conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 23 laparoscopic adrenalectomies performed between 1997 and 1999.
  • Procedures included removal of cortical adenomas, nodular hyperplasias, cysts, carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, and myolipoma.
  • Ultracision ultrasonic shears were utilized to potentially reduce operative time.

Main Results:

  • A total of 23 adrenalectomies were successfully completed laparoscopically.
  • Various adrenal lesions were resected, including benign and malignant tumors.
  • Operative times ranged from 90-260 minutes, with a trend towards reduction.
  • One intraoperative complication (diaphragm perforation) occurred, managed successfully.
  • Patients were discharged on postoperative days 2-3.
  • No extreme hypertension was noted during pheochromocytoma removal.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a safe and effective procedure for a range of adrenal gland pathologies.
  • The minimally invasive approach facilitates rapid patient recovery and short hospital stays.
  • Current evidence supports laparoscopic adrenalectomy as the method of choice for adrenal surgery.
