[Detubulised ureterosygmoidostomy]

There is renewed interest on ureterosymoidostomy due to the application of gut detubulisation principles that provide a low pressure reservoir in continuity with the colon. We contribute our experience with 15 detubulised ureterosymoidostomies, 13 of the Mainz II type and 2 with dual detubulisation. Mean follow-up was 12.6 months. Continence was achieved in all cases immediately. Total continence rate was 92.8% with mean frequency of passing stools/urine of 4.4 times during daytime and 2.5 times at night. Detubulised ureterosymoidostomy is a means for an effective continent internal urinary bypass that provides patients with good quality of life.
