Summary

Researchers improved shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) by controlling cavitation bubbles with a piezoelectric annular array (PEAA) generator. This enhanced stone fragmentation. SWL-induced cavitation in vivo is constrained by tissue, potentially causing vessel rupture.

  • Cavitation bubble dynamics significantly impact SWL efficacy and safety.
  • Controlling cavitation is crucial for optimizing SWL treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate methods for active control of cavitation during SWL.
  • To analyze the impact of constrained bubble dynamics on SWL outcomes.
  • To experimentally validate the influence of tissue confinement on SWL-induced cavitation.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a prototype piezoelectric annular array (PEAA) shockwave generator for retrofitting on existing lithotripters.
  • Utilizing high-speed shadowgraph imaging to visualize bubble dynamics in vascular phantoms.
