    Summary

    This study reviewed 11 thrombocythaemia cases, finding all were secondary to other myeloproliferative disorders. This raises questions about whether primary thrombocythaemia is a distinct disease entity.

    Background:

    • Thrombocythaemia, a condition characterized by elevated platelet counts, can be primary or secondary to other disorders.
    • Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a group of diseases affecting blood cell production.

    Observation:

    • Eleven patients with thrombocythaemia were admitted to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg's Department of Internal Medicine over five years.
    • All observed cases of thrombocythaemia were secondary to other myeloproliferative disorders.

    Findings:

    • The study found that all 11 thrombocythaemia cases were secondary to underlying myeloproliferative disorders.
    • In one patient, thrombocythaemia was observed to precede the diagnosis of the primary myeloproliferative disorder.

    Implications:

    • The findings challenge the classification of primary thrombocythaemia as a distinct disease entity.
    • Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between thrombocythaemia and myeloproliferative neoplasms.
