Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Research
  • Medical Imaging
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Adventitial vasa vasorum (VV) are implicated in coronary atherosclerosis development and progression.
  • Existing histologic methods present challenges in visualizing the 3D spatial pattern of coronary VV.
  • A knowledge gap exists regarding the intricate 3D architecture of the coronary vascular network.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review advances in using micro-CT for visualizing the coronary circulation.
  • To highlight the potential of micro-CT in studying adventitial VV.
  • To address the limitations of traditional methods in mapping coronary VV.

Main Methods:

  • Microscopic computed tomography (micro-CT) enables detailed 3D visualization of microvascular structures.
  • This review focuses on the application of micro-CT in examining the coronary vascular system.
  • Technological advancements in micro-CT are discussed in relation to vascular imaging.

Main Results:

  • Micro-CT provides unprecedented three-dimensional views of the entire microvascular structure.
  • The technique facilitates the study of the spatial arrangement of adventitial VV.
  • Advances in micro-CT are enhancing our understanding of coronary microcirculation.

Conclusions:

  • Micro-CT is a powerful tool for visualizing the coronary circulation, particularly adventitial VV.
  • This technique overcomes previous limitations in studying the 3D pattern of coronary VV.
  • Further application of micro-CT promises significant contributions to understanding coronary atherosclerosis.
