Exercise training after myocardial infarction did not negatively impact left ventricle (LV) remodeling in patients with small infarcts. Remodeling is variable and depends on infarct and LV size.

Background:

  • Regular exercise enhances fitness but its impact on left ventricle (LV) remodeling post-myocardial infarction (MI) requires clarification.
  • This study examined moderate to high-intensity exercise training effects on LV remodeling following a first MI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of exercise training on left ventricle (LV) remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI).
  • To assess changes in LV size, infarct size, and shape in patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation.

Main Methods:

  • An exercise group (n=30) completed 12 weeks of training post-MI, with echocardiograms and stress tests.
  • A control group (n=30) received no formal exercise training.
  • Left ventricle (LV) size (ESAi), infarct size (%AWM), and sphericity were quantitatively assessed.

  • Exercise training did not significantly alter LV endocardial surface area-to-body surface area (ESAi) or percent abnormal wall motion (%AWM).
  • No significant changes in LV size or infarct size were observed in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Exercise training did not adversely affect LV remodeling in patients with predominantly small myocardial infarcts.
