Background:

  • Nervous system cells are susceptible to oxidative damage due to low antioxidant content and high polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease where oxidative stress is a significant factor.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and quantify oxidative stress markers in the blood of multiple sclerosis patients compared to healthy controls.
  • To analyze the levels of various enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and fatty acid profiles in MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Multiparameter analysis of antioxidants: Vitamin E, ubiquinone, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase.
  • Fatty acid patterns of phospholipids analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

    • The blood of multiple sclerosis patients displays clear indicators of significant oxidative stress.
    • Antioxidant deficiency and increased lipid peroxidation are implicated in MS pathogenesis.
    • Targeted antioxidant therapy, including Vitamin E, ubiquinol, and selenium, alongside dietary modifications, may offer a promising strategy to mitigate MS progression.
