Summary

Younger patients and those with worse vision in their second eye are more likely to have both eyes operated on for cataracts. This suggests a future increase in demand for bilateral cataract surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision.
  • Understanding factors influencing bilateral cataract surgery is crucial for healthcare planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with undergoing second eye cataract surgery.
  • To predict future demand for bilateral cataract surgery.

Main Methods:

  • An observational, longitudinal study followed 242 patients for 2 years after first eye cataract surgery.
  • Clinical, perceived health, and sociodemographic characteristics were compared between patients who had one vs. two surgeries.

Main Results:

  • Over half (51.7%) of patients underwent second eye surgery within 2 years.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Worse visual acuity (≤6/18) in the second eye and younger age (<65 years) were significantly associated with second eye surgery.
  • Nearly half of patients with only one surgery had poor vision in the second eye.
  • Conclusions:

    • Worse visual acuity and younger age are key predictors for bilateral cataract surgery.
    • A significant unmet need for second eye surgery exists, indicating a potential future rise in demand.
