    Summary

Partial vestibuloplasty with secondary epithelization shows useful results in maxillary cases when properly indicated, despite recidivation risks. However, this procedure is generally not recommended for mandibular cases due to high rates of recurrence.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Periodontology
    • Surgical Anatomy

    Context:

    • Vestibuloplasty is a surgical procedure to deepen the oral vestibule.
    • Secondary epithelization involves wound healing without grafting.
    • Maxillary and mandibular arches present distinct anatomical considerations.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of partial vestibuloplasty with secondary epithelization.
    • To assess outcomes in maxillary and mandibular vestibuloplasty.
    • To determine the indications and contraindications for the procedure.

    Summary:

    • Sixty-one cases of partial vestibuloplasty using secondary epithelization were analyzed.
    • Maxillary vestibuloplasty yielded useful results with proper patient selection, despite potential for recurrence.
    • Mandibular vestibuloplasty demonstrated a high rate of recurrence, suggesting it is generally contraindicated.

    Impact:

    • Provides evidence-based guidance on the appropriate use of partial vestibuloplasty.
    • Highlights the differential success rates between maxillary and mandibular procedures.
    • Informs surgical decision-making for improving periodontal health and prosthetic stability.
