Fibromuscular hyperplasia of the iliac arteries

Fibromuscular hyperplasia is an uncommon disease of arteries with an unknown aetiology and an obscure natural history. It occurs rarely in the iliac vessels and may cause intermittent claudication. Two cases of fibromuscular hyperplasia of these arteries are reported. Both patients are middle-aged women. One presented with intermittent caludication and has been treated by aortofemoral bypass. The other is at present symptomless; the diagnosis was made in the course of the investigation of an abdominal bruit. Some features of the condition are discussed.
