Antibiotic therapy in oral and maxillofacial surgery

Too frequently, antibiotics are used unnecessarily for routine dental procedures. Good surgical techniques, immaculate postoperative oral hygiene, and close follow-up are sufficient in many situations. In infectious processes, culture and snesitivity testing should be used to determine the cause of infection before surgical or antibiotic therapy is given. A conservative approach should provide adequate care and minimize the gross overuse of antibiotics.
