Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the time course for the development of stress-induced behavioral changes.
  • To investigate if repeated restraint stress leads to behavioral tolerance.

Main Methods:

  • Male Wistar rats were subjected to 2-hour restraint stress.
  • Animals were tested in the EPM at various time points (1, 2, 24, 48 hours) post-stress.
  • A separate group underwent daily restraint for 7 days and was tested 24 hours after the final session.

Main Results:

  • Restraint stress significantly decreased open arm exploration and enclosed arm entries.
  • These effects were observed 24 and 48 hours, but not 1 or 2 hours, after stress.
  • Daily restraint for 7 days resulted in tolerance to the stress-induced behavioral changes.

Conclusions:

  • Stress-induced hypoactivity in the EPM is a delayed effect, emerging 24-48 hours post-stress.
