Insights
A novel coil embolization technique successfully treated hemolysis in a child with mitral valve issues. This minimally invasive approach resolved the complication, offering a promising solution for similar pediatric cases.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Interventional Cardiology
- Pediatric Cardiology
Background:
- Persistent hemolysis can complicate mitral valve repair and replacement surgeries.
- Partial dehiscence of the valve ring is a known complication leading to perivalvular leaks.
- Malnutrition can exacerbate surgical complications in pediatric patients.
Observation:
- A 6-year-old malnourished child experienced ongoing hemolysis post-mitral valve surgery.
- The patient had undergone valve repair and two subsequent mitral valve replacement surgeries.
- Partial dehiscence of the mitral valve ring was identified as the cause.
Findings:
- A modified catheter delivery system was employed to deploy six Gianturco coils.
- The coil embolization successfully occluded the perivalvular mitral leak.
- Hemolysis resolved completely following the intervention.
Implications:
- This coil embolization technique offers a minimally invasive option for managing perivalvular mitral leaks.
- The approach may be beneficial in pediatric patients with similar complex cardiac conditions.
- Successful resolution of hemolysis suggests improved patient outcomes and quality of life.
Abstract:
A 6-year-old malnourished child had persisting hemolysis after attempted valve repair and two surgeries for mitral valve replacement due to partial dehiscence of the valve ring. A modified catheter delivery system was utilized to deploy a total of six Gianturco coils. The hemolysis resolved and the patient was doing well 17 months later. The technique may be helpful in other patients with perivalvular mitral leaks. Cathet. Cardiovasc. Intervent. 49:64-67, 2000.
