Background:

The Irish ALS Register collects epidemiological data on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in Ireland.
Misdiagnosis of ALS can occur, leading to patients being treated for the wrong condition.

Purpose of the Study:

To detail the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients incorrectly diagnosed with ALS.
To identify "ALS mimic syndromes" that resemble ALS.

Main Methods:

Review of medical records for patients referred to the Irish ALS Register.
Clinical examination of patients where possible.

Main Results:

Between 1993-1997, 32 patients (7.3%) were rediagnosed with non-ALS conditions.
Multifocal motor neuropathy and Kennedy disease were common ALS mimics.
