Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Headache Medicine

Background:

  • Cluster headache is a primary headache disorder.
  • Aura is an uncommon symptom in cluster headache, unlike migraine.

Observation:

  • Retrospective chart review of 101 cluster headache patients.
  • Identified six patients (approximately 6%) experiencing aura.

Findings:

  • Auras were predominantly visual (five patients) and occasionally olfactory (one patient).
  • Aura duration ranged from 5 to 120 minutes.
  • Auras consistently occurred with or were followed by severe cluster headache attacks.

Implications:

  • Highlights the rare occurrence of aura in cluster headache.
  • Suggests a potential overlap or distinct presentation of neurological symptoms in cluster headache patients.
  • Further research may elucidate the underlying mechanisms of aura in this condition.
