Background:

  • A large population study previously showed an inverse correlation between D-dimers and free thyroxine (FT4).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between fibrinogen levels and free thyroxine (FT4) in a large patient cohort.
  • To determine if this relationship is independent of age, sex, and smoking status.
  • To assess if FT4 levels correlate with a pro-coagulable state.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of fibrinogen and FT4 levels in 959 patients.
  • Statistical correlation analysis (Pearson's r) was performed.

  • Subgroup analyses were conducted for non-smokers and patients with strictly normal FT4 levels.

    • A significant inverse correlation was found between fibrinogen and FT4 levels (r = -0.12, P = 0.0001) in the overall population.

    Conclusions:

    • Results suggest a tendency towards a more coagulable state in individuals with normal-low FT4 compared to normal-high FT4.
    • Findings support previous observations linking FT4 to hemostatic balance.
