    Summary

Many hospital patients have undiagnosed lung disease. Spirometry screening tests revealed that 42% of patients without known respiratory issues had abnormal lung function, with 47% showing obstructive lung disease.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonary Medicine
    • Diagnostic Testing

    Background:

    • Undiagnosed respiratory conditions can impact patient outcomes.
    • Routine hospital admissions often lack specific respiratory assessments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of unrecognized ventilatory impairment in general hospital admissions.
    • To assess the utility of spirometry in identifying lung disease in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluated 531 routine hospital admissions.
    • Conducted spirometry tests (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC) pre- and post-bronchodilator.
    • Included patients presumed free of significant respiratory disease.

    Main Results:

    • 42% of patients exhibited abnormal ventilatory test results.
    • 47% of patients were diagnosed with obstructive lung disease.
    • Significant prevalence of undiagnosed lung conditions found.

    Conclusions:

    • Screening spirometry is valuable for assessing general medical and surgical admissions.
    • Early detection of ventilatory impairment can improve patient management.
    • Routine respiratory function tests should be considered in hospital settings.
