Summary

Lorazepam impairs auditory priming, similar to its effects on visual priming. This study shows that the memory effects of lorazepam extend beyond visual processing to auditory perception.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Lorazepam is known to impair explicit memory and visual perceptual priming.
  • Previous research has not investigated lorazepam's effects on auditory priming.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if lorazepam's negative impact on perceptual priming is limited to the visual domain.
  • To investigate whether lorazepam also impairs auditory priming.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-two healthy volunteers participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
  • Participants received either placebo or lorazepam (0.038 mg/kg) orally.
  • Auditory and visual priming were assessed using word-stem completion tasks, and explicit memory was measured by free recall.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lorazepam significantly reduced free recall for both visual and auditory stimuli.
  • Auditory priming was impaired by lorazepam, mirroring effects seen in the visual domain.
  • The observed impairment in priming was not attributable to sedation or explicit memory contamination.

Conclusions:

  • The detrimental effects of lorazepam on perceptual priming are not confined to the visual modality.
  • Lorazepam impairs priming in both visual and auditory domains, suggesting a broader impact on implicit memory processes.
