Prehospital management of spinal trauma: an evolution
1Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
Objective:
To discuss the past, present, and future prehospital management of patients who sustain acute spinal cord injury (SCI).
Discussion:
Prehospital management of SCI has evolved during the past two decades. Current standards emphasize the immediate treatment of life-threatening injuries while simultaneously preparing for transport to the nearest, appropriate facility. Rapid extrication techniques, pharmacological intervention, airway management, treatment controversies, and future areas of study are discussed.
