Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Nephrolithiasis

Background:

  • Caliceal diverticula with calculi are uncommon urinary tract conditions.
  • Standard treatment involves endoscopic surgery, including marsupialization, fulguration, and neck dilatation.
  • These endoscopic procedures can be associated with significant morbidity.

Observation:

  • This report details the fifth case of retroperitoneoscopic management for a caliceal diverticulum.
  • The patient presented with a history of chronic flank pain due to calculi within the diverticulum.
  • Retroperitoneoscopy was utilized as the surgical approach.

Findings:

  • Retroperitoneoscopic management achieved a stone-free rate comparable to traditional open surgery.
  • The procedure demonstrated lower morbidity compared to standard endoscopic treatments.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This approach effectively addressed the calculous disease within the caliceal diverticulum.
  • Implications:

    • Retroperitoneoscopy represents a viable and less morbid alternative for treating caliceal diverticular stones.
    • This technique may offer improved patient outcomes and faster recovery.
    • Further research into retroperitoneoscopic techniques for complex stone disease is warranted.
