Summary

Regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) cause cardiac dilation but do not alter left ventricular (LV) elastances. Dobutamine increases LV elastance but doesn't reverse RWMA-induced dilation.

Background:

  • Regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) are common in cardiovascular disease.
  • The impact of RWMA on left ventricular (LV) elastance, a measure of cardiac stiffness, is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of esmolol-induced RWMA on regional and global LV elastances in a canine model.
  • To assess the impact of dobutamine on RWMA and LV elastance.

Main Methods:

  • RWMA were induced in canine left ventricles using esmolol infusion.
  • LV pressure-volume relationships and pressure-length relationships were measured using conductance catheters and sonomicrometers.
  • Measurements were taken at baseline, during esmolol infusion, and after dobutamine administration.
