Tinea pedis, or athlete's foot, is more common in children than previously thought. A family history and summer onset are common, and it should be considered in childhood foot dermatitis.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pediatrics
  • Mycology

Background:

  • Tinea pedis is considered infrequent in prepubescent children, with limited epidemiological and clinical data.
  • This study addresses the scarcity of information on pediatric tinea pedis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of tinea pedis in children.
  • To identify common etiologic fungi and associated dermatoses in pediatric cases.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective collection of tinea pedis cases in children aged 3 months to 14 years (1995-1997).
  • Inclusion criteria: positive potassium hydroxide preparation.
  • Fungal cultures on Sabouraud's agar and clinical investigation of characteristics.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 21 children (15 boys, 6 girls) were included; all were otherwise healthy.
  • The intertriginous type was most common (53.3%), often affecting toe-webs (32.3%).
  • A family history (86%) and summer occurrence (52.4%) were noted. Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequent pathogen (69.2%). Associated conditions included onychomycosis (33.3%).

Conclusions:

  • Tinea pedis may be more frequent in children than suspected.
  • Strong associations with family history and summer seasonality were observed.
  • Tinea pedis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pediatric foot dermatitis.
