High cyclin E expression in non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) is linked to smoking and squamous cell type. This elevated cyclin E indicates a poorer prognosis and shorter survival for NSCLC patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize cyclin E expression in NSCLC.
  • To investigate the correlation between cyclin E expression and clinicopathological features.
  • To evaluate the prognostic significance of cyclin E in NSCLC.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry was used to assess cyclin E expression in 217 NSCLC samples.
  • Statistical analyses, including chi-squared test, logistic regression, and Cox proportional hazards model, were employed.

    • High-level cyclin E expression (≥30% labeling index) was observed in 53% of NSCLCs.

    • High cyclin E expression correlated with significantly shorter patient survival in both curatively resected NSCLCs and stage I NSCLCs (P=0.03 and P=0.007, respectively).

    Conclusions:

    • High-level cyclin E expression is a significant and independent unfavorable prognostic factor in NSCLC.
    • Cyclin E may play a critical role in the biological behavior of NSCLCs.
    • Elevated cyclin E expression could serve as a novel prognostic marker for NSCLC.
