This case study shows that human leukocyte interferon can temporarily control multiple myeloma progression. However, tumor cells developed resistance, suggesting interferon may be best used early in treatment for multiple myeloma.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells.
    • Melphalan is a chemotherapy drug used for multiple myeloma.

    Observation:

    • A patient with relapsed multiple myeloma received human leukocyte interferon therapy.
    • Interferon treatment resulted in temporary symptom improvement and reduced myeloma markers.
    • Side effects included fever and low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).

    Findings:

    • After 5 months, the multiple myeloma progressed despite continued interferon.
    • In vitro tests showed decreased tumor cell sensitivity to interferon over time.
    • This suggests the development of interferon resistance in multiple myeloma.

    Implications:
