Retrobulbar optic nerve cysticercosis, a rare parasitic infection, was diagnosed in a woman with vision loss. Imaging revealed a cystic lesion with a mural nodule within the optic nerve.

Background:

  • Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval cysts of the tapeworm Taenia solium.
  • Retrobulbar optic nerve involvement is an uncommon manifestation of neurocysticercosis.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of progressive vision loss.
  • Clinical examination findings were not detailed.

Findings:

  • Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a 7-mm ring-enhancing cyst with a mural nodule in the left optic nerve.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging confirmed a cystic lesion with peripheral enhancement of the mural nodule.
  • Sonography revealed a cystic mass with increased echogenicity at the site of the mural nodule.
