Background:

  • Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare condition characterized by thick, woody-like exudates.
  • Idiopathic cases often involve bilateral palpebral conjunctival membranes.

Observation:

  • Described are 3 patients with ligneous conjunctivitis, including bilateral idiopathic cases and a unilateral case post-pterygium excision.
  • Treatments such as topical medications (hyaluronidase, chymotrypsin, heparin, cyclosporine) and surgical excision showed limited success.
  • Conjunctival autografting in one patient led to pseudomembrane formation at the donor site.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed amorphous eosinophilic hyaline material and chronic inflammatory cells in excised membranes.
  • Immunohistochemistry demonstrated a predominance of T-lymphocytes.
