Postmastectomy lymphedema (PML) can rarely develop into diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLCL). This report details a new case and reviews three previously documented instances of this rare secondary malignancy.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Lymphedema Research

Background:

  • Postmastectomy lymphedema (PML) is a recognized complication following breast cancer surgery.
  • Postmastectomy angiosarcoma (PMA) is the most frequent malignancy associated with PML.
  • Primary malignant lymphoma in PML is exceptionally rare, with only a few cases documented.

Observation:

  • This report presents a case of diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLCL) arising within the context of PML.
  • The study reviews three previously published cases of primary malignant lymphoma in PML.

Findings:

  • Diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLCL) is a rare but possible secondary malignancy in patients with postmastectomy lymphedema (PML).
  • The incidence of lymphoma in PML is significantly lower than other secondary malignancies like angiosarcoma.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Increased awareness of DLCL as a potential complication in PML patients is warranted.
  • Further research may elucidate the pathogenesis and optimal management strategies for lymphoma in PML.
  • Early detection and diagnosis are crucial for improving outcomes in these rare cases.
