Severe retinal vasculitis can cause vision loss in patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). This autoimmune complication may affect vision and respond poorly to treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Immunology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary immunodeficiency disorder.
  • Autoimmune manifestations are increasingly recognized in CVID patients.

Observation:

  • Three young patients with CVID presented with decreased vision.
  • All patients exhibited bilateral retinal vasculitis and diffuse retinal edema.
  • Two patients developed retinal neovascularization without evidence of ischemia.

Findings:

  • Retinal vasculitis was the cause of vision decrease in five of six eyes.
  • Treatment response was limited, with only one patient showing improvement.
  • No intraocular or systemic infection was detected.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Retinal vasculitis is a potential autoimmune complication of CVID.
  • Early diagnosis and management are crucial for vision preservation.
  • Further research is needed to understand the pathogenesis and optimize treatment strategies.
