Summary

Intravenous dexamethasone significantly reduced nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This antiemetic effect was observed in 23% of patients receiving dexamethasone versus 63% receiving a placebo.

Background:

  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common complications following laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of intravenous dexamethasone in preventing nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • To compare the antiemetic effects of dexamethasone with a placebo (saline).

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 90 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
