Main Results:
- ICAM-1 mRNA expression was significantly higher (24-fold) in preterm delivery (PTD) compared to elective cesarean section before term (CST).
- ICAM-1 protein concentration was four-fold greater in PTD samples compared to CST.
- Expression levels were also elevated in spontaneous labor at term (SLT) compared to CST, but less so than in PTD.
Conclusions:
- The human amnion expresses ICAM-1.
- ICAM-1 expression is markedly upregulated in the amnion associated with preterm labor and delivery.
- These findings highlight ICAM-1 as a potential factor in the pathophysiology of preterm birth.
