Summary

This study reports the early degradation of bioabsorbable tacks used in meniscal repair. The tacks showed signs of resorption and were removed during a second-look arthroscopy, indicating a novel observation in knee surgery.

Background:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a common orthopedic procedure.
  • Meniscal tears often accompany ACL injuries and require surgical repair.
  • Bioabsorbable tacks are frequently used for meniscal repair due to their presumed safe degradation.

Observation:

  • A dancer with a history of ACL tear underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with concurrent medial meniscus repair using bioabsorbable tacks.
  • Persistent posterior knee pain led to a "second-look" arthroscopy 14 weeks post-reconstruction.
  • The meniscus repair was stable, but the bioabsorbable tacks exhibited motion and were easily removed.

Findings:

  • Inspection revealed that the barbs of the bioabsorbable tacks had been resorbed.
