Area of Science:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy

Background:

  • Parenteral nutrition (PN) is often used when enteral nutrition (EN) is not feasible.
  • Enteral nutrition is generally preferred due to cost-effectiveness and clinical advantages.

Observation:

  • Three case studies are presented where a nutrition support team (NST) was consulted.
  • Initial consultation was for PN, but EN was ultimately initiated.

Findings:

  • An organized, knowledgeable NST can facilitate the use of EN in patients typically receiving PN.
  • Gastrointestinal access was successfully obtained by the NST physician for EN initiation.

Implications:

  • Implementing an organized NST can expand the application of EN.
  • This approach demonstrates significant cost savings and clinical efficacy.
