Summary

A rare case of endogenous aspergillus endophthalmitis occurred in a young immunocompromised boy. Prompt treatment with systemic and intravitreous therapies led to a favorable visual outcome.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Mycology

Background:

  • Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis is a serious intraocular infection.
  • Aspergillus species are an uncommon cause of endophthalmitis, particularly in pediatric cases.
  • Immunocompromised status is a significant risk factor.

Observation:

  • A 6-year-old immunocompromised boy presented with endogenous aspergillus endophthalmitis.
  • The chorioretinitis exhibited an unusual extra-posterior localization.
  • The patient's overall health status required careful management.

Findings:

  • Successful treatment was achieved using a combination of systemic antifungal agents and intravitreous injections.
  • Visual acuity was restored following the therapeutic intervention.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The unusual localization of the infection did not preclude a positive outcome.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering endogenous fungal infections in immunocompromised children, even with atypical presentations.
    • Early diagnosis and aggressive multimodal treatment are crucial for preserving vision.
    • Further research into the management of pediatric endogenous aspergillus endophthalmitis may be warranted.
