Background:

  • Gaucher disease (GD) has subtypes with varying neurological involvement.
  • Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) is effective for GD1 but not GD2, and may slow GD3 progression.
  • Distinguishing between GD1 and GD3 is critical for treatment decisions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if objective ocular motor assessment can improve the detection of GD3.
  • To evaluate the utility of saccade initiation failure (SIF) detection in diagnosing GD3.

Main Methods:

  • Eight children diagnosed with GD were assessed using D.C.-electro-oculography and/or video.
  • Induced optokinetic and vestibular nystagmus were analyzed for quick-phase deficits indicating SIF.
