Summary

Surgically induced scleral necrosis, a condition causing scleral melt and conjunctival retraction, effectively responds to conjunctival covering. This surgical complication is best managed by covering the exposed sclera with conjunctiva.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Surgically induced scleral necrosis is a rare but serious complication following ocular surgery.
  • Conjunctival retraction can exacerbate scleral thinning and increase the risk of melt.

Observation:

  • This report details three cases of surgically induced scleral necrosis.
  • Patients presented with significant conjunctival retraction overlying the scleral defect.

Findings:

  • The scleral melt demonstrated a positive response to conjunctival covering of the scleral defect.
  • Early intervention with conjunctival covering or transplantation was crucial for successful management.

Implications:

  • Covering the exposed sclera is the primary treatment for surgically induced scleral necrosis with conjunctival retraction.
  • Prompt surgical management, including conjunctival stretching or grafting, can prevent further complications and preserve ocular integrity.
