Summary

Schizophrenia is linked to increased microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) dendritic length in the hippocampus. This study observed elevated MAP2-NP and MAP2-T in specific hippocampal subregions of individuals with schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively assess differences in MAP2 immunoreactive dendritic length in hippocampal subregions of individuals with schizophrenia compared to controls.
  • To investigate the expression of total MAP2 (MAP2-T) and a non-phosphorylated form (MAP2-NP).

  • Stereological length estimation technique using Bouffon's Needle principle.
  • Image analysis software applied to hippocampal tissue from 12 schizophrenic and 12 control subjects.

    • The study provides quantitative evidence of increased MAP2 immunoreactive dendritic arborization in the hippocampus in schizophrenia.
    • Findings suggest potential alterations in dendritic structure or MAP2 levels within hippocampal pyramidal neurons in schizophrenia.
    • These results contribute to understanding synaptodendritic abnormalities in schizophrenia.
