Summary

Information collected during the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) does not predict clinical performance in pediatric residency. Faculty ratings showed agreement, but correlations with NRMP ranking and other metrics were weak or non-existent.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Pediatric Residency Training
  • Clinical Competence Assessment

Background:

  • The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a critical component of graduate medical education selection.
  • Predicting resident clinical performance is essential for effective training and patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if data from the NRMP application process predicts clinical performance during pediatric residency.

Main Methods:

  • Faculty members rated the clinical performance of 69 pediatric residents.
  • Data analyzed included NRMP rank, National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) scores, medical school grades, honor society membership, interview scores, in-service examination scores, and board certification examination scores.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Faculty ratings demonstrated substantial agreement.
  • NRMP rank showed weak correlations with faculty ratings (absolute: r=0.19; relative: r=0.20).
  • No significant correlations were found between faculty ratings and NBME Part I or American Board of Pediatrics certification exam scores. Weak correlations were observed with interview scores (r=0.27) and PGY-1 in-service exams (r=0.28).

Conclusions:

  • Faculty consensus exists regarding the clinical competence of pediatric residents.
  • NRMP ranking, standardized test scores, interview performance, and medical school grades are not reliable predictors of resident clinical performance.
