Background:

  • Low back pain is a prevalent condition with multifactorial causes.
  • Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are anatomical variations that may influence spinal mechanics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between the presence of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae and chronic low back pain.
  • To determine if LSTV are a significant risk factor for developing low back pain.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of plain radiographs.
  • Comparison of LSTV incidence between a cohort of patients with chronic low back pain and a control group of normal subjects.
  • Classification of LSTV using the Castellvi system.

Main Results:

  • A significantly higher prevalence of LSTV was observed in patients with low back pain (35.1%) compared to normal subjects (15.8%) (p < 0.01).
  • Castellvi type II transitional vertebrae showed a significantly higher incidence in the low back pain group (p < 0.01).
