A new web-based system enables digital distribution of radiological images in filmless hospitals. This approach simplifies access and integration compared to traditional Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Health Informatics
  • Web Technologies

Background:

  • The transition to filmless radiology necessitates efficient digital image distribution within hospitals.
  • Traditional Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) can be complex and difficult to integrate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel system for distributing radiological images using World Wide Web technologies.
  • To provide a user-friendly, platform-independent solution for accessing medical images.

Main Methods:

  • Implementation of a web server for querying and retrieving images from a Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) archive.
  • Integration of a Java-based DICOM viewer for in-browser image display.
  • Utilizing standard internet technologies for system architecture.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The developed system allows efficient query and retrieval of DICOM images.
  • Images are viewable within a standard web browser using the DICOM Java Viewer.
  • The system demonstrates ease of installation, maintenance, and integration with existing web technologies.

Conclusions:

  • Web technologies offer a simpler, more flexible alternative to traditional PACS for filmless radiology environments.
  • The system enhances interdepartmental relationships and simplifies image management, particularly for MRI and CT scans.
  • User-friendliness and remote accessibility (with security) are key advantages.
