Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate postural hemodynamic responses in acute stroke patients.
  • To compare these responses with non-stroke controls at two time points post-admission.
  • To assess the risk of detrimental postural blood pressure reductions during early mobilization.

Main Methods:

  • 40 acute stroke patients (mild-moderate severity) and 40 controls underwent postural change tests (supine to sitting, supine to standing).
  • Blood pressure and heart rate were measured at baseline and during postural changes at Day 1 and Week 1 post-admission.
  • Analysis focused on hemodynamic changes from supine measurements.

Main Results:

  • Stroke patients showed increased mean arterial blood pressure upon sitting and standing on both days.

Conclusions:

  • Early upright positioning for rehabilitation in mild-to-moderate stroke is unlikely to cause harmful blood pressure drops.
  • Findings support the safety of early mobilization protocols in stroke recovery.
